How to get more reviews for a home service business

For a local trade business, reviews are the closest thing to free lead generation. They decide who gets called from the search results, and they quietly justify a higher price. The businesses with hundreds of them are rarely better at the work — they are better at asking.

Ask at the moment of relief

There is a short window right after the job is finished and the customer is visibly happy. That is when the ask feels natural. A week later it feels like homework.

Build it into the close-out routine so it happens on every job, not only the memorable ones.

Ask twice: in person, then by link

The verbal ask creates the intention; the link makes it possible. Neither works reliably alone. A tech who says 'if you were happy with today, a quick review really helps us' followed by a text with a direct link converts far better than either half.

Send the link within the hour while the job is still fresh.

Remove every point of friction

Link straight to the review form, not the profile page. Do not ask for a rating on your own site first and then redirect — it adds a step and, on some platforms, breaks the rules.

Keep the message short, personal, and free of marketing language. Two sentences beats a template.

Make it systematic, not heroic

The reason most businesses stall at eleven reviews is that asking depends on someone remembering. A scheduled request that fires after job completion turns a good intention into a steady trickle.

Steady beats spiky: platforms and customers both trust a business that gains reviews continuously over one that gained thirty in a week.

Answer every review, especially the bad one

A calm, specific reply to a critical review does more for prospective customers than the review itself does damage. It shows how you behave when something goes wrong, which is exactly what a nervous homeowner is trying to work out.

Reply once, acknowledge the issue, state what you did about it, and move the rest offline. Never argue in public.

Put the reviews to work

Quote them on estimates, on your website, and in local campaigns. A review is proof you have already earned — reusing it costs nothing and shortens the next customer's decision.

Stop running this from memory.
